What Makes the SureFit® Calculator the Best Choice?

SureFit® Guarantee: we guarantee the perfect size, or we’ll pay your return shipping costs if an exchange is needed. That way there’s no doubt your pet will get the perfect fit.

We highly recommend using our SureFit® Calculator as it ensures the perfect custom fit for your pet. It requires a couple measurements, but only so we can provide your pet with the very best experience.

We recognize this takes a few minutes of your time, but those minutes are worth the happiness your pet will experience once they try out their wheelchair for the first time. Our wheelchairs have already helped more than 81,000 other pets. Let’s make that 81,001!

Other companies simply have you select a wheelchair based on weight, but that often results in a poor fit. Why? A 30 lb bulldog has a very different body type from a 30 lb corgi, but those companies will provide both with the same wheelchair.

How to Choose the Right Size

how to size a walkin' scooter
how to size a walkin' scooter

The length of the dog on the size guide is for reference only. Every pet is shaped differently, and we recommend using your pet’s weight as the main point of reference.

When measuring length, start at the last rib. Every dog positions their legs differently; If your pet’s legs extend behind them as they drag, measure to the tips of their toes. If your pet sits on their legs as they scoot, measure to the end of the rump.  The bag length should ideally match with your pet’s measurement, however if the bag length on the chart is longer than your pet’s measurement this is also acceptable. If the bag length listed is shorter than your pet’s measurement, you will need to size up.

Is the Walkin’ Scooter Right for My Pet?

The Walkin’ Scooter enables pets with hind end paralysis to glide around the house on wheels instead of dragging, reducing the risk of injury and making it easier for them to be mobile. The Walkin’ Scooter is intended only for pets with full hind end paralysis, meaning they are unable to stand and have very limited to no movement in the hind limbs but their front limbs remain strong. For pets who can still stand and walk with their back legs we recommend the Walkin’ Wheels wheelchair for support, which allows them to exercise their back legs in a natural standing position. The Walkin’ Drag Bag is an option for indoor protection for pets who have limited mobility in the rear legs.

What to Expect:

Whether your pet is newly paralyzed or has been so for a while, new items and experiences can be intimidating to them. Therefore, a slow and gentle introduction to using the scooter will help your pet form a positive association with it.  Start by having the scooter in the room and letting your pet investigate the scooter on their own, rewarding them with treats and praise. The first few times you have your pet try wearing the scooter may only be for a few minutes, gradually working up to longer lengths of time as they gain confidence in themselves while using it.

For Best Results:

Supervision is recommended while your pet is in their Scooter, as there is always the possibility that the scooter could get stuck on a piece of furniture or similar obstruction. It is safe for your pet to lie down wearing the scooter, and can be left on for extended periods as long as your pet is comfortable. The Scooter is also great for incontinent pets who use diapers. Please check on your pet regularly to ensure they are comfortable, clean, and dry in the Scooter. Paralyzed and incontinent pets should never lie in one position for too long.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Can my pet lie down in the Scooter?

Yes; the low profile scooter base allows your pet to lie down and rest when they need to. Always check to ensure your pet is comfortable while resting in the scooter, and does not remain in one position for an extend amount of time.

How long can my pet stay in the Scooter?

It is safe for your pet to use the scooter for extended amounts of time under supervision. The Scooter Base is padded and the Scooter Bag has a mesh ventilation panel to keep your pet comfortable. For incontinent pets, ensure that hygiene is maintained and their diaper is changed regularly while wearing the scooter bag. Paralyzed and incontinent pets should never sit or lay in one position for too long. Pets should always be supervised when using any mobility device.

Can my pet use their Scooter outside?

The scooter is recommended for indoor use only as a way to help your pet easily maneuver indoor obstacles. The Scooter’s special rollerball casters will move quickly across hardwood flooring, tile, linoleum, and Berber carpeting but are not suited for outdoor terrains and could be caught up on roots or stones. For your pet’s safety, the Scooter should only be used inside.

For outdoor use, we recommend the Walkin’ Wheels Wheelchair.

Can my pet be left unattended in the Scooter?

We recommend that your pet be supervised when using any mobility device. There is always the possibility that the scooter can get stuck on or under a piece of furniture, doorway, or similar obstruction– for your pet’s safety it is important to check on them regularly while the scooter is in use.

Does my pet need the Walkin’ Wheels Wheelchair, or the Walkin’ Scooter?

Deciding which product is right for your paralyzed pet can be tricky. If your dog is paralyzed in the rear, both the Walkin’ Wheels Wheelchair and the Walkin’ Scooter are great options. While the Wheelchair is perfect for use outside, to assist with going on walks and exploration, the Walkin’ Scooter is ideal for helping your pet move throughout the house easily.

The Medium base comes with XSmall, Small, and Medium Scooter sizes.

The Large base comes with Medium/Large, Large, and XLarge Scooter sizes.

Can my pet’s Scooter be cleaned?

The Scooter base and foam pad can be cleaned with a cloth or sponge. The Scooter bag can be detached from the base for easy cleaning; it should be washed by hand and air-dried.

What is the Scooter constructed of?

The Walkin’ Scooter Bag is made of durable nylon fabric and features chest and neck panels lined with soft, comfy fleece. It also has a mesh panel for ventilation. The Walkin’ Scooter base is padded with closed cell memory foam for comfort and durability.

My pet is also experiencing weakness in their front legs, is the Scooter a good choice for them?

The scooter is recommended for use in pets who are fully paralyzed in the rear legs, but still have strong front legs. Your pet will have to use their front legs to walk and steer the scooter.

For pets who are experiencing weakness or paralysis in both the front and rear legs, we recommend the Full Support Walkin’ Wheels Wheelchair.
