AMHERST, NH (December 13, 2017) – Lorelai Priest is an 18-month-old child from Berlin, N.H., with genetic muscular myelopathy, which causes severe mobility challenges. A Bella’s Bumbas mobility assistance chair was donated to her by the inventors of the device, who give away all the chairs free of charge. Lorelai recently had a visit with Oscar, an 11-year-old Beagle mix who also uses a special chair – a dog wheelchair. The two of them exemplify what is possible with the support and love of family, friends, and even strangers.

Lorelai’s parents, Trisha and Joe Priest, provide lots of extra care, including frequent intervention to help Lorelai breathe, a function which is sometimes hampered by her muscular response. Weekly physical, occupational, pool, and speech therapy sessions, many provided in the home, continue to help Lorelai build muscular strength and coordination. Lorelai has three siblings: Libby (10), Joseph (7), and Joyce (4). Joe (father) is a policeman with both the Berlin and Littleton Police Departments.
Bella’s Bumbas is a nonprofit organization that donates the mobility assistance chairs it designs to children who suffer from spina bifida or conditions like Lorelai’s. Since traditional wheelchairs are not usually covered by insurance for very young children because they grow out of the chairs too quickly, the Bella’s Bumbas chairs allow children who might otherwise be immobile to have a means to develop their hand-eye coordination and socialization skills. Lorelai has had the chair for a few weeks now, and has been gradually learning how to make it move by rolling the wheels with her hands.
Walkin’ Pets by HandicappedPets.com donates the wheels used to make the Bella’s Bumbas, which are the same wheels used to produce their Walkin’ Wheels dog wheelchairs. Walkin’ Pets thought it would be fun for a child using a Bella’s Bumbas to meet a dog using a Walkin’ Wheels. So when company employee Laura Webber recently adopted Oscar, a sweet dog who was given up by his previous owner and uses a Walkin’ Wheels, they made the trip to visit with Lorelai and her family. Lorelai and Oscar show what is possible with a little help!
