FAQs
WITH WALKIN' WHEELS, YOU'RE TAKING THE RIGHT STEP
To us, the ideal wheelchair for small breeds has to meet 3 criteria: 1) it has to be comfortable and effortless for your pet to use, 2) it has to be chew-proof and able to withstand the elements, and 3) it has to be simple to set up and transport.
Before we created Walkin' Wheels, we were in your shoes searching for that ideal wheelchair. But after coming up empty handed time after time, we decided to take matters into our own hands. The result is the world's favorite dog wheelchair for small breeds.
WHY YOUR PET WILL LOVE IT
The Perfect Fit
A Jack Russell Terrier has a very different body shape from an English Bulldog. Instead of providing both dogs with the same wheelchair, we designed the Walkin' Wheels small dog wheelchair to fit them based on their unique measurements. When you get Walkin' Wheels, your dog will thank you.
Also, your dog will be able to pee and poop without you having to remove their wheelchair.
A Durable, All-Terrain Wheelchair
Dogs love the outdoors. And as we all know, they love tearing up everything in their path. But we love them anyway.
This is why we've created a chew-proof and rust resistant extruded aluminum wheelchair frame. Additionally, the included wheels will not puncture and are all-terrain.
WHY YOU'LL LOVE IT
Simple Setup
When we were designing the Walkin' Wheels small dog wheelchair, we knew it had to be simple to use for pets and owners alike. Setting up your pet's new wheelchair is a lot like using a regular dog harness. The only big difference is attaching the harness to the wheelchair frame, which takes only a few seconds. See how quick Marley's wheelchair was to set up and watch as she takes her first steps.
Easy to Transport & Store
The Walkin' Wheels small dog wheelchair is easy to transport to the dog park or store in the closet when not in use. The secret is that we smartly designed the wheelchair to be durable without taking up too much space, so it can fit in a car or anywhere in the home while occupying little room.

Frame:
The frame is blue, seafoam, or pink powder-coated aluminum. It will not bend, break, or rust. Black knuckles are on each side of the frame, which hold the leg of the wheelchair to the frame. The wheels/struts will be inserted into the leg and adjusted to the proper height. The knuckle has a high and low setting which can be adjusted with a Phillips screwdriver.

Width Connectors:
Your wheelchair will come with two width connectors (7″ and 4″). One is already installed in the back of your cart. If you need more width, the wheelchair comes equipped with a longer connector in the box.

Length Extenders:
Your wheelchair will come with two extenders (side rails) installed, which determine the length of your dog. The length of the extender should end in the middle of the dog’s front leg. It should not pass the front leg.

The Front Harness
The dog’s head goes between the blue and black straps. The red strap goes under the dog’s front legs and clips on the side of the harness. The shoulder pads are made of neoprene and keep the straps and buckles from causing discomfort for the dog. Neoprene comfort sleeves wrap around the straps for the dog’s comfort. Comfort sleeves can be cut in half if they are too long.

Leg Rings:
The dog’s hindquarters are held in place by the leg rings, or our rear harness support system. The leg rings can also be used as a lifting harness when out of the wheelchair; the excess strapping can be touch-fastened together to make handles on each side.

Wheels & Struts:
The wheels are attached to a metal piece called a “strut.” Each wheelchairs comes with either 4″ or 8″ foam wheels, which are great for all terrains. They feature a dense foam interior with an outer rubber layer. These wheels will not puncture, wear extremely well, and are easy to clean. Your dog’s wheel size depends on your pet’s measurements.

Belly Belt:
The Belly Belt will help support your dog’s back. It is not always necessary to use the belly belt, but is highly recommended for dogs with a long back, overweight or elderly dogs, dogs with curvature of the spine, and dogs with disc problems.

Stirrups 8″:
Stirrups are used to hold the dog’s legs off the ground so they don’t drag due to paralysis, knuckling under, or foot injuries. The adjustable stirrups are positioned to hold the foot up at the hock. If your dog doesn’t need them, the stirrups may be removed from the wheelchair.

The Manual:
The manual gives instructions and tips on assembling and using the Walkin’ Wheels Wheelchair.

Tool Kit:
The tool kit comes in a plastic bag and includes an Allen wrench and set screws. The (optional) set screws may be used to tighten up the wheelchair frame and reduce flexibility, depending on your preference.
Yes! In fact, your dog’s wheelchair is designed so that dogs can go to the bathroom and get the exercise they need. Not only can pets pee and poop while using their dog wheelchair, but their wheelchair also actually encourages them to go. A “down” dog tends to be less active, which can impact the internal functions of their body. Once a dog is in their wheelchair, they are standing upright and moving more which encourages their body to function correctly and allow them to relieve themselves naturally.
How does it work?
Both male and female pets can pee and poop freely while using their wheelchair. Their hind end is fully supported from underneath by their rear leg rings keeping them in a comfortable and natural standing position. Although your pet can not squat while in their wheelchair, they will relieve themselves while standing.
It’s easy to determine the right size Walkin’ Wheels wheelchair for your pet. All you need is two simple measurements to choose the right size wheelchair for your pet:
- Measure the Rear Leg Height to the toe pad, ideally when your pet is laying down. Do not pull the leg tight; leave some natural bend.
- Your pet’s armpit to rump (ATR) measurement. To measure your pet’s length, measure from behind the front leg and across to the end of your dog’s body or rump.

Yes, the dog wheelchair will gives pets the support they need to stand, walk, and rebuild their strength. The wheelchair supports your dog to relieve pressure and reduce the weight placed on their legs making it easier for them to walk. We encourage your dog to use his/her rear legs to maintain muscle mass and to get exercise, while using their cart your pet will work to develop the muscle in the rear legs and build up their stamina as they exercise. A dog does not need to be fully paralyzed to benefit from using a dog wheelchair. If the rear legs are paralyzed, then the stirrups will keep their legs from dragging.
Yes. The Walkin’ Wheels is designed to be used both indoors and outside. If your paralyzed pet needs an indoor mobility solution that can be worn for extended periods of time, we recommend the Walkin’ Scooter.
If you have a Dachshund or Corgi, it is OK for them to take a rest up against a pillow or bed, because their legs are so short. Otherwise, it is not recommended, due to back or disc issues that could worsen by laying down in the wheelchair.
No. Our chair is designed NEVER to collapse on the dog’s leg or spine. We’ve gone to great lengths to be sure of it. The chairs are designed with the help of veterinarians and rehabilitation specialists to hold the dog up, keeping the spine and legs in the optimal position for safety and healing.
What’s more, the purpose of the chair is to give the dog exercise and the freedom to go outside and do his business. When the dog is tired, you should never leave him in the chair.
The reviews we have seen of the experimental sit-down spring-loaded style have not been positive. Although we have done a great deal of research, we have not found a safe way for a chair to collapse on a dog.
It’s very easy to get a small dog in and out of their Walkin’ Wheels dog wheelchair. First, place the front harness on your pet and place your dog on the ground with the wheelchair behind them. Lift their hind legs and place them through the leg rings before lifting the side bars and clipping the harness to the wheelchair frame.

Every dog and disability are unique, so is their recovery process. We have seen varying degrees of rehabilitation with dogs using the wheelchair. Some dogs have been able to improve so much that they no longer needed the wheelchair. While your dog is in the wheelchair, they are getting physical therapy improving their physical and mental health.
