Vet Tech Scholarship Awarded to Penn Foster Student

SCRANTON, PA (October 6, 2023) – Elly von Wehren is a Vet Tech student in the class of 2025 at Penn Foster in Scranton, PA has been awarded the 2023 Walkin’ Pets Vet Tech Scholarship. Walkin’ Pets, a NH-based pet mobility company, annually awards this scholarship to support the next generation of Vet Tech and rehab professionals who will provide compassionate care to animals.
Elly’s goal as a Vet Tech student is to specialize in rehabilitation and focus on helping animals get back to the activities they love and have the best quality of life possible. In her words, “We underestimate the amount that pain inhibits an animal’s life and affects their behavior, especially because they try to hide their pain. And particularly in aging pets. Teaching owners how to spot signs and keep their pets healthy and active is a passion of mine. This is an animal welfare issue that can be addressed through a combination of rehabilitation, modalities, wheelchairs, braces, therapeutic exercise, and strength training. As well as spreading awareness for the many ways we can help our pets.”
As a veterinary technician student who works in canine rehabilitation, Elly met a senior French Bulldog who helped shape her perspective on the impact a dog wheelchair can have. The patient had undergone IVDD surgery, but even a year later, the Frenchie was unable to walk. “We gave him a Walkin’ Wheels wheelchair, and he is now able to enjoy playing with his sibling again. Not only has his quality of life improved, but he is also gaining muscle tone. Even his paw withdrawal responses are improving after using the wheelchair as a tool to get mobility back.”
Walkin’ Pets is honored to award the 2023 Vet Tech Scholarship to someone as deserving as Elly von Wehren.
