AMHERST, NH (November 25, 2020) – Norman is one lucky donkey! Rescued over 20 years ago by his owner Heidi, Norman has been enjoying Ohio farm life! One morning Norman was found laying on the ground, injured and unable to stand on his own. His owners rushed him to Ohio State University where the Veterinarians went above and beyond in his care.
The OSU staff led by Dr. Timko diagnosed Norman with a spinal condition called IVDD which left him with decreased motor function in his back-left leg. Not helping matters Norman weighed over 340 lbs. making it even more challenging to get back on his feet. Over the course of his treatment Norman received laser therapy four times along with physical therapy to help him heal, but to heal Normal needed to walk on his own. His owner Heidi knew if Norman could get back on his feet he could lose weight, she took matters into her own hand and reached out to Walkin’ Pets, a pet mobility company based out of NH to see if they could help.
The Walkin’ Pets team had never built a wheelchair for an animal as big as Norman, but they got right to work. Designing Norman, the first ever Walkin’ Wheels Donkey Wheelchair. His new wheelchair features special fixed knuckles and a reinforced frame rugged enough to support Norman’s weight. Norman took to his wheelchair right away! After only a few weeks, Norman is down to a slim 312 lbs. He has built up his strength and can now stand on his own for hours unsupported! His wheelchair has made all the difference, just last week Norman was released from OSU and is now back home at the farm!
