Physical Therapy
for HandicappedPets by Debbie Gross
Caring for a handicapped pet is
a special endeavor, requiring expertise, devotion, time and lots of love and
patience.
Physical therapy for the handicapped
pet is an essential aspect of their car, whether it is a temporary or permanent
handicap. Physical therapy may include strengthening exercises for a dog recovering
from an orthopedic surgery, joint mobilization for pain relief for a dog suffering
with a disc problem, laser therapy to reduce the pain associated with arthritis,
aquatic therapy for strengthening and pain relief, functional training for
the dog that has been paralyzed, the utilization of carts and slings to help
with a paralyzed pet, or endurance exercises to assist a three legged pet.
Each aspect of a physical therapy treatment may improve the dog's quality
of life and most likely improve their function. I have worked with rehabbing
animals for over ten years and am constantly amazed at what physical therapy
can do for animals.
Handicapped animals that may have
been euthanized years ago are now given another chance through the principles
of physical therapy. Animals are able to live fulfilling lives with their
loving owners in a very functional capacity.
Each treatment goal is animal specific.
For example, one dog may reach their goal of walking outside to eliminate
in a cart, while another dog may reach their goal when they hike with their
owners. The rewards are endless as is the potential handicapped pets do when
give the proper treatment and attention.
