Drifter came to live with me when he was three months and 5 days old. I saw
him in a pet store and he captured my heart completely right away. We had
many, many good times during the five years and eleven months we were
together and we went through a lot of rough spots, too. Through it all, the
breakups of relationships, moves, illnesses, he remained my one, sole reason
for going on. Drifter was my strength. He offered solace and gave comfort.
He always knew when I was feeling low or when I was sick. When I thought I
was training him in reality he was training me. He was the one constant in
my life. He gave his love to me unconditionally asking for nothing in return
except to be loved back.
Drifter loved everyone (and he knew a LOT of people) with the exception of
three people, so I learned to trust his judgement. And everyone who met
Drifter fell in love with him. Even veterinarians loved this little guy who
was so friendly. Some vets he visited had never seen a Mini-Dachshund with
Drifter's coloring (He was a Silver Dapple.) and were quite taken with him.
His last vet, Dr. Mary Green, even became attached to him. Not a good thing
to happen to a vet.
It's been six years since Drifter left me and went to Rainbow Bridge. Even
though The Wrecking Crew is with me I am still having a hard time without
Drifter at my side. I know that he wouldn't want me to be sad so by writing
this book perhaps I'll be able to work through the grief I am still feeling.
And if I'm able to accomplish that then, once again, Drifter has helped me.
Rest peacefully, my Blue Eyed Main Man.
