My dog Nakita is everything to me.

She inspires me each and everyday and is the reason I wake up.
Ever since her heatstroke in July '03, my beautiful 11 year old Rottweiler Nakita, hadn't been herself. But I thought it was more then just that. So in about January '05, my family decided to bring Nakita in for a check-up, after my consistent nagging (annoying, but I probably saved Nakita's life).
We told the vet Nakita's symptoms. She was panting all the time when it was room temparture in our house. She drank about 2 bowls of water a day. She was having accidents in the house during the day often and always had to go out to go potty. My once energetic dog was so weak. Nakita didn't even want to move. I feared her life was coming to a close. She had also vomited a few times.
The vet told us Nakita looked like a normal and healthy dog on the outside, but he would do some blood tests to see if anything was abnormal. After this news, I took a deep breath and smiled. I thought nothing was ever wrong with my Nakita. But I was wrong.
A day or two later, my mom told me she had been on her way to her own doctor appointment when the vet called her cell phone. Nakita was diabetic, her electolytes were out of balance, and we had to get Nakita in right away. They weren't sure if Nakita would make it.
My mom went to get Nakita after her doctor appointment and brought her into the vet right away. I was at school then, but my mom took us all to see Nakita that night. When we got there, she was in a kennel and looked up, seeming to give us a weak smile when we saw her.
My sister and I began to cry at the sight of Nakita, so weak and with an IV on her leg. We just stayed with her a few minutes, and then we had to leave, because Nakita had to stay overnight.
I worried about her that night so much. Memories flashed through my mind. I couldn't remember a time without Nakita. We are both the same age, and we got her when we were both about a year old.

Amazingly, Nakita pulled through.
Now she has to get two injections of insulin each day, and pills for arthritis. I used to be afraid of having a dog with a disability. I thought it would be so scary. But it's not. Nakita is my same precious angel, always happy to see me. She is much better now, and she continues to live a happy life, now shared with two new puppies. Nakita is given the same amount of attention (possibly a tad more).
Don't give up on your pet. Nakita pulled through a heatstroke, this experience, and so much more. So love with unconditional love, and no matter what the turn out, you'll know you gave your pet a wonderful life.
