Melon the Monitor (Japan)

I have a green tree monitor (varanus prasinus) named Melon who lost her front left hand sometime during her early life.  I got her recently from a person who could no longer care for her.  She is about two years old, and is an energetic little lizard who eats voraciously.  She is housed with three other tree monitors: a black male (varanus beccarii), a black female, and a blue female (varanus macraei).

She seems to have a phantom feeling in her limb, as she attempts to use the missing hand to climb.  I make sure there are plenty of vines and branches in her cage to assist her in climbing, as well as cushioned flooring in case she loses her grip.

Her stump can get a little irritated at times, so I treat it with an antibiotic cream when it seems raw.

Other than that, her behavior, feeding and socializing are all normal.

Thanks for listening.

I would like any donations received from clicking on my page to go to Windmill Animal Rescue.  They are friends of mine.

Their dog Boris passed away a couple days ago.  He used to come to my coffeehouse in Minnesota where I would feed him cookies.

Take care,
John
