Irish Wolfhound Puppy

Here are some photos of the new handicapped Irish Wolfhound puppy we have "rescue adopted".  She has quite the locomotor handicap...gallops more like a kangaroo...when she walks and trots her legs go all akimbo...but she is a very happy dog.  Our vet thinks it (coordination problem, not being happy) could be from a malfunction in her cerebellum ...the verdict is still out on the actual cause.

When she was 11 days old, her mother stepped on her and broke her left hind leg tibia and fibula...it was splinted and properly cared for. the owners thought her funny walking was due to the splint and consequent exercise/development issues.  After a couple months they realized it was more than that and decided they needed to find her a home...keeping her at a breeding/showing facility would not be in her best interest.   The breeder tonight mentioned he thought it could be a cartilaginous embolism..(a piece of cartilage broke free in her spine during the an injury (such as when she got stepped on) and migrated someplace to pinch the spine...something that wouldn't show up on X-rays.....

We just have to wait and see how she does.....she's not in pain from it.

I had put out inquiries about rescuing wolfhounds after Boris passed away.  The secretary of the wolfhound club gave me a call Sunday (I had been told by people who have rescued wolfhounds and by the wolfhound rescue groups the wait is normally 1 to 1 1/2 years once you get on the list!)...She arrived from Canada on Monday evening....they had been calling her Peggy due to her splint (peg leg)...we are still trying to come up with something a bit more aristocratic...she weighs 87 lbs and will be 6 months on August 23!.

Jay's youngest brother, Ryan, is in the photos with her, as well as our dog Pavel.  She really likes Ivan (almost like she can tell he has locomotor problems as well!). And gives Sophie her space.   She fits in quite well so far.

She is really sweet...lets even the kittens at the store steal her food (she backs away and turns her head away from them...Will keep you posted about her doings and well being.
