I live in Hiwinui, Manawatu, New Zealand with my husband Steve and 10 dogs, 8 Labradors (which I breed and show) and 2 Border Terriers (along with several other pets).
(Our children are all young adults now and moved out of home)
I would like to add my Basil my Border Terrier's story to your site please.
Basil is 14 years old and today has been diagnosed with osteosarcoma in his left jaw.
My vet thinks surgery is not an option and thinks Basil may have only a matter of weeks to live.
I knew something was wrong as Basil has been very snappy and aggressive towards our Lab pup kept from my last litter, very out of character, as Basil has always been wonderful with the Lab pups. Only Basil and Chelsea (our other Border) live inside and the Lab pup will join her mother and other relations out in our kennels soon. He has been prescribed 20grm Predisone to help reduce the swelling there by allowing his jaw to open more allowing him to eat more comfortably. Basil has had two operations in the past few years to remove a small non-malignant lump from his throat. We are devastated at the thought of losing him as we love him dearly.
We always assumed our younger Border Terrier Chelsea, 12 years would be the first to go as she is a blind diabetic, receiving insulin twice daily. Our two eldest Labradors Rumour 15 years and Jake 14 years have both recently recovered from potentially life threatening illnesses but have both miraculously recovered. Jake had surgery for a tumor in one testicle 18 months ago which fortunately had not spread. Rumour has survived three strokes and just a few weeks ago temporary blindness brought on by a severe lung infection and was near death. Another of our Labs Deuce now 6 years old, became very ill with a rare type of hepatitis 2 years ago while we were in America on holiday.
Miraculously all three dogs are now fine!
Basil however seems to have drawn the short straw.
Naturally I was keen to search the internet for articles on bone cancer in dogs hence finding your wonderful site!
I have attached a photo of Basil taken just a few months ago, doing what he loved, posing!
Thank you and kind regards,
Gabrielle K.
