What Makes the SureFit® Calculator the Best Choice?

SureFit® Guarantee: we guarantee the perfect size, or we’ll pay your return shipping costs if an exchange is needed. That way there’s no doubt your pet will get the perfect fit.

We highly recommend using our SureFit® Calculator as it ensures the perfect custom fit for your pet. It requires a couple measurements, but only so we can provide your pet with the very best experience.

We recognize this takes a few minutes of your time, but those minutes are worth the happiness your pet will experience once they try out their wheelchair for the first time. Our wheelchairs have already helped more than 81,000 other pets. Let’s make that 81,001!

Other companies simply have you select a wheelchair based on weight, but that often results in a poor fit. Why? A 30 lb bulldog has a very different body type from a 30 lb corgi, but those companies will provide both with the same wheelchair.

Frequently Asked Questions

What comes with my pet’s Walkin’ Wheels front wheel attachment?

Your pet’s new Walkin’ Wheels front wheel attachment comes with everything your pet needs to get up and walking again!

small dog wheelchair front wheel attachment
  • 1 set (2) Wheels and Struts
  • 2 Extenders
  • 1 set Leg Rings
  • Nuts, Bolts, and Allen Key

A: Left and Right Extenders (2).
These replace the extenders that originally came with your Walkin’ Wheels Rear wheelchair. The extenders will have a white label with “left front” or “right front.” Socket shoulder screws (4) should be on the outside of the wheelchair and are used to attach the leg rings.

B: Legs (2).
Silver struts (attached to C1 or C2) fit inside the wheelchair legs. The height can be adjusted by a push button on each strut.

C1: Struts and 3” wheels (2).
The caster adapters will be marked with a raised “L” or “R” to indicate which side they are installed on. This is VERY important. The raised L or R should face the inside of the wheelchair with you standing behind the wheelchair.
or
C2: Struts and 2” wheels (2).
Struts come attached to 2” wheels for shorter dogs like Dachshunds. These are labeled “L” or “R” to indicate which side they are installed on.

D: Front Leg Rings (1).
You will not need to use the front harness that comes with the rear wheelchair. You will install the front leg rings instead, just like the rear leg rings. Leg rings should look like two Cs and not two Vs. The straps go over the frame; pull the black plastic clip over the socket shoulder screw and push upward. You will hear a click when it is locked into place. The dog’s front legs will go inside each ring to support his/her body in the front. To remove the leg rings, put your thumb on the circle and pull down.

E: Bag of screws (1).
Only for replacements, if needed.

Can my pet pee and poop in the wheelchair?

Yes! In fact, your dog’s wheelchair is designed so that dogs can go to the bathroom and get the exercise they need. Not only can pets pee and poop while using their dog wheelchair, but their wheelchair also actually encourages them to go. A “down” dog tends to be less active, which can impact the internal functions of their body. Once a dog is in their wheelchair, they are standing upright and moving more which encourages their body to function correctly and allow them to relieve themselves naturally.

How does it work?

Both male and female pets can pee and poop freely while using their wheelchair. Their hind end is fully supported from underneath by their rear leg rings keeping them in a comfortable and natural standing position. Although your pet can not squat while in their wheelchair, they will relieve themselves while standing.

Can my dog sit in a wheelchair?

No. Our wheelchair is designed NEVER to collapse on the dog’s leg or spine. We’ve gone to great lengths to be sure of it. The wheelchairs are designed with the help of veterinarians and rehabilitation specialists to hold the dog up, keeping the spine and legs in the optimal position for safety and healing.

What’s more, the purpose of the wheelchair is to give the dog exercise and the freedom to go outside and do his business. When the dog is tired, you should not leave him in the wheelchair.

The reviews we have seen of the experimental sit-down spring-loaded style have not been positive. Although we have done a great deal of research, we have not found a safe way for a wheelchair to collapse while holding a dog.

Can my dog lie down in the wheelchair?

If you have a small pet, it is OK for them to take a rest up against a pillow or bed, because their legs are so short. Otherwise, it is not recommended, due to back or disc issues that could worsen by laying down in the wheelchair.

Can my pet use their rear legs in the wheelchair?

Yes, the dog wheelchair will gives pets the support they need to stand, walk, and rebuild their strength. The wheelchair supports your dog to relieve pressure and reduce the weight placed on their legs making it easier for them to walk. We encourage your dog to use his/her rear legs to maintain muscle mass and to get exercise, while using their cart your pet will work to develop the muscle in the rear legs and build up their stamina as they exercise. A dog does not need to be fully paralyzed to benefit from using a dog wheelchair. If the rear legs are paralyzed, then the stirrups will keep their legs from dragging.

How do I measure my dog for a wheelchair?

It’s easy to determine the right size Walkin’ Wheels wheelchair for your pet. All you need is two simple measurements to choose the right size wheelchair for your pet:

  1. Measure the Rear Leg Height to the toe pad, ideally when your pet is laying down. Do not pull the leg tight; leave some natural bend.
  2. Your pet’s armpit to rump (ATR) measurement. To measure your pet’s length, measure from behind the front leg and across to the end of your dog’s body or rump.

Will this wheelchair rehabilitate my dog?

Every dog and disability are unique, so is their recovery process. We have seen varying degrees of rehabilitation with dogs using the wheelchair. Some dogs have been able to improve so much that they no longer needed the wheelchair. While your dog is in the wheelchair, they are getting physical therapy improving their physical and mental health.
